Forensic Science Events, June 2023
A round up of UK forensic science and criminal justice calls for papers and events in June 2023
Various calls for papers are out in preparation for what promises to be an interesting summer of forensic science events into the Autumn. Here are the most pressing calls for papers and a summary of June events for your CPD calendar:
British Association for Human Identification Summer Conference, Pathways into Identification, 16-18 June 2023 at the Fire Service College, Moreton-on-Marsh
The call for papers is now open: Identification specialists, both well established and early career, and students are invited to present on any area in the field of human identification.
BAHID say, “For this conference we are especially keen to hear presentations shedding light on lesser known aspects of human identification, on mental health in forensic sciences, and on resources available to/experiences of those seeking to start or advance their career in this field. As we are well aware it is not always easy to take those first steps, we would also like to hear about your experiences and pathways to the role you are in now. Is this where you wanted to be, or did you envision a different pathway at the start?
“We are also welcoming poster presentations in any area of identification, with prizes to be won for all student presentations (oral or poster).”
DEADLINE for abstracts is Wednesday 31st May 2023
Send abstracts and presentation/workshop proposals to conference@bahid.org

CFSF Autumn Conference, Forensic Science: a case based activity, on Friday 27th October at Horizon, Leeds — Call For Papers by Friday 23 June 2023
This event, run as part of the CSFS 2023 AGM, aims to offer practitioners, academics and researchers the opportunity to showcase their experiences and share good practice, particularly within multidisciplinary teams, to highlight progress within forensic science and encourage learning within the forensic science community.
This year, there will be two parallel sessions:
Forensic Science: a case based activity: Further details are available here
Learning & Teaching: Further details area available here
Presentations should be approximately 20 minutes. Abstracts, indicating whether they relate to oral or poster presentations, of no more than 300 words, with up to three references and one image, should be submitted to nicola.schumacher@csofs.org by the deadline.
The CSFS Autumn Conference is usually the forensic science networking event of the year. This will be the second year returning to an in-person format, and if last year is any indication, it will be a crucial opportunity to meet up with industry colleagues.
Staffordshire University, Successful Writing For Publication Workshop, Monday 26 June & Tuesday 27 June 2023
Virtual Introduction: Wednesday 31 May 1-3pm
Designed for forensic science and crime scene practitioners, academics, and researchers (at any stage), these workshops offer an opportunity to come together with others to network and participate in the process of writing with a view to getting your work published in Science & Justice or other journals.
Attendees can book either day as a stand alone event or both days together.
Virtual Introduction: An online session to meet the facilitator and other attendees, with tips and preparation guidance, and opportunity for questions in advance of the workshop.
Day 1: Designed for those new to writing a journal article or case study, or those who may have done so some time ago and would benefit from a current Editor’s insight. The morning comprises an introduction to the publishing process and assists delegates in framing or considering the potential novelty of their work, particularly for Science & Justice. The afternoon provides a mini ‘writing retreat’. Delegates will receive support and guidance on their article and writing throughout the day, including tips, advice, and feedback.
Day 2: Designed for those who have attended Day 1, those who may have already started writing an article, have previously participated in a writing retreat or those with previous experience in research/case study publishing. The day will provide much more time for writing with some important breaks for reflection and networking. The day begins with the setting of achievable personal goals and continues through a series of silent writing periods.
Paid car parking is available on the university campus. Stoke-on-Trent railway station is approximately 300m from the workshop location. A buffet lunch will be provided.
